For most optometrists the symptoms presented by patients with learning disorders are likely to be referred to as dyslexia. These symptoms may be of varied and the optometrist must be able to explore all avenues to eliminate the involvement of eyes as a contributory to learning dysfunctions.
The Concept of Dyslexia is probably one of the most elusive in the whole of educational psychology. To try and pin it down and provide an exact definition that educationalist psychologists and other practitioners can agree on is utopia. We are constantly bombarded with new ideas and theories that are believed to achieve the ultimate answer to the problem. The truth is that many remain naïve and befitting only a market trial and error that may be more suitable to fraction of the suffering population. Dyslexia is probably one of the most researched topics not just for its academic interest but also because of its severe impact on the lives of many, psychologically and physically. The need to understand why some children find reading and writing difficult, yet show remarkable intelligence in art or math is fast becoming a race in both scientific and medical worlds. Many institutions, societies and legislations are fostering research methods to understand the causes and the evolution of this developmental disorder, in turn promoting enormous social changes in the way children with learning difficulties are treated.
