Behavioural Optometry

We are proud to be one of the few centres in the UK offering behavioural optometry, a specialised approach to vision care that looks beyond how clearly you can see, focusing on how the entire visual system works together to support learning, comfort and performance in everyday life.

Supporting the Way You See, Learn and Live

Behavioural optometry focuses on how your eyes and brain work together to process visual information, which plays an important role in helping you learn, read, concentrate, play sport, and manage everyday activities with greater ease. Unlike a standard eye test, it assesses key visual skills such as eye tracking, focusing, coordination, depth perception, and visual processing, as difficulties in these areas can sometimes affect performance at school, work, or in daily life. Through a detailed visual assessment, we can identify any areas of difficulty and create a personalised plan to help strengthen and support your visual system.

Behavioural Optometry is for anyone whose vision impacts more than just how clearly they see, this approach looks deeper to understand and improve how your eyes and brain work together, helping you see, learn, and live more comfortably and confidently.

  • Learning Difficulties

Some children and adults with learning difficulties have perfectly normal eyesight, yet still find reading, writing, or concentrating hard work. This is often due to issues with how the eyes focus, move, or work together. Words may blur, seem to move, or be misread. Difficulties with eye tracking, coordination, and visual processing can all affect learning and confidence. Behavioural Optometry can help identify and support these challenges through tailored glasses, vision therapy, and exercises designed to strengthen visual skills, improving performance both in and out of the classroom.

  • Brain Injury

Often in cases of brain injury or vestibular function problems, the visual system is compromised in subtle ways that lead to fatigue and affect the ability to perform activities for daily living. A neuro-developmental assessment can help identify and remediate these issues in the form of glasses that might include a specific tint and a specific use of prism. Visually based activities can also be prescribed to help improve overall function as well as general advice on managing fatigue.

  • Stroke

A stroke can impact your vision in many ways, affecting how your eyes work together, how you process what you see, and your ability to focus and track objects. These challenges can make daily activities harder and slow down recovery. Behavioural optometry offers specialised assessments and tailored treatments — including glasses with prisms, vision therapy, and exercises — designed to improve visual function, reduce strain, and support a smoother rehabilitation process.

  • Neurodiverse Conditions

For people with neurodiverse conditions, visual processing can be different and sometimes challenging. Difficulties with eye coordination, tracking, or focus can impact learning, concentration, and comfort. Behavioural optometry provides tailored assessments and therapies to address these unique visual needs, helping improve focus, reduce eye strain, and enhance everyday performance.

Vision Therapy

Vision therapy, also known as vision training, is the support technique provided by behavioural optometrists and involves a series of targeted activities designed to strengthen key visual skills such as focusing, tracking, and eye coordination. These exercises often incorporate balance, body coordination, timing, rhythm and peripheral awareness to help reinforce and integrate these skills more effectively.

By combining visual skills with physical coordination and timing, therapy helps individuals apply what they’ve learned to everyday activities like reading, writing, and playing sports. Sessions begin with simple tasks and gradually increase in difficulty as progress is made. Patients are reassessed every six sessions to track improvements and adjust the program accordingly.

The ultimate goal is to reduce or eliminate the symptoms that initially brought the patient to therapy, enhancing their visual comfort and overall performance.
